| Medicines for Nepal(GB) Purpose Statement Medicines For Nepal(GB) is dedicated to inspiring all adventure travelers to Give Back(GB) to the places they visit by delivering basic first aid supplies to designated medical centers as well as remote community-run health posts along their journey. Rationale: Every year hundreds of thousands of adventure travelers visit some of the worldÕs most remote places, many accessible only by foot. Tourists often pay thousands of dollars for these vacations, yet despite the tourism monies flowing in, many of the countries they visit remain among the poorest in the world. In Nepal, for example, more than 100,000 adventure travelers visited just in the month of November 1999. Yet despite this interest and income, Nepal currently ranks as one of the worldÕs poorest countries, with 11 million people -- nearly half its total population -- living below the international poverty line. A majority of Nepalese suffer from poor nutrition along with a general absence of modern medical care, especially in rural and remote areas. Relative to people in more urban parts of Nepal, residents of rural and remote regions have a higher infant and maternal mortality rate, a lower life expectancy, and suffer more from chronic and acute illness. Many health clinics in rural areas routinely go months without receiving even the most basic of supplies (Source: World Bank). If even 20% of the adventure travelers who visited Nepal last November had each taken just a half-pound package of basic first aid supplies to drop off along their trek, more than 10,000 pounds of supplies could have been delivered to health posts along the trail. Over the years, this steady trickle of supplies can make a difference in the health and well-being of hundreds of thousands of people. Medicines For Nepal(GB) aims to make adventure travelers aware of the opportunity to Give Back and make a difference. The program seeks to inform travelers in the process of planning their adventure vacation about the health care needs of the areas they are visiting. Travelers can consult the Medicines For Nepal(GB) web page, and with the help of detailed maps and request lists, learn exactly which medical supplies are needed at which health care facilities along their route. Once they are aware of specific needs in particular areas, they can put together a small package of supplies -- band aids, anti bacterial ointment, aspirin, etc. -- and deliver them along their trip. The idea is simple yet the impact can be tremendous. To learn more please contact us. |
